Heart pounding, India compared the Argentine contract to the one she’d just received from Scotland, glancing from one to the other, unbelieving. Yet there it was, Tenn Holdings, written in bold black in both contracts. She even remembered being amused by the name.

“Why Tenn?” she’d asked Jack.

“Short for Tennessee,” he’d replied gruffly.

Surely there could be no relation between this Tenn and Jack’s Tenn. Coincidences like this probably happened all the time, she reasoned, peering uneasily at the carriage clock on the desk.

“Look at this, Chloë. This is the weirdest coincidence.” She glanced at Chloë who had woken up and was now lounging on the daybed, flipping through Hello. “The company that’s buying Dunbar has the same name as Jack’s offshore company. They’re even both from Curaçao.” She gave a nervous laugh.

“But that’s impossible. You can’t have two offshore companies with the same name in the same jurisdiction. Even I know that. By the way, did you know that Fergie has her own show on telly now? She looks absolutely super.

Met her the other day in New York. She seemed awfully nice.”

“Chlo, pay attention. This is important.”

“Sorry.” She lowered the magazine and their eyes met across the room. “What’s wrong Indy? You look like death.”

India jumped up, drumming the papers against the smooth surface of the desk, her head on fire, a thousand thoughts battling in her mind.

“Indy, you’re white as a sheet. Oh my God!” Chloë’s mouth dropped open, horrified. “You don’t think that Jack—?” The question hung in the air. Then she shook her head firmly. “No, Indy. It’s too far-fetched. Forget it. I know where you’re coming from, but no. Jack’s not like that. According to Peter he’s the straightest chap he’s ever dealt with. There has to be a mistake.”

“But as you just pointed out, two offshore companies can’t have the same name. And what about Serena? I told you she’d phoned and told me about this offer. I think—no, I know because she made a point of telling me—that she and Jack had a fling. He’s very cagey and refuses to talk about it.” She sat down again, her legs weak, and gazed blindly at Chloë. “You don’t think he just wanted Dunbar all along and that was the reason he—Oh God, Chlo, I don’t think I could bear it if—” She buried her head in her hands. Chloë rushed over and hugged her.

“Stop it, Indy. We mustn’t jump to conclusions. It might just be a silly mistake and you’d be torturing yourself for nothing. Come on.” She shook India’s limp arm gently. “Go phone him and clear the whole thing up.”

But India was miles away, remembering Serena and Jack in the library, how before her departure from Scotland Serena had been friendlier than usual, and then the phone call with the offer on her return. It was all too coincidental. Perhaps Jack’s presence in Buenos Aires, and getting her involved in the Palacio de Grès was simply part of a master plan to acquire Dunbar. Perhaps all they had shared over the past few weeks was nothing but a well-staged farce.
